The first thing she always noticed was the stench. The soil, the air, the few plants were permeated with the smell of decay. It was a bouquet of the worlds worst smells all rolled into one and just a whiff of this particular bouquet was enough to make Nanori’s stomach roll in protest.
As she walked the length of the Dead Scar in Eversong, Nanori had her bow drawn and she would rapidly shoot any of the undead monstrosities that continued to plague her homeland. She made this trek on foot, once a week, as a tribute to those of her kind who had fallen in that fateful battle years ago.
Ookami walked at her side, the faithful wolf always with her on this trek as she needed the comfort of the beast after her task was done. As she walked towards Silvermoon City, not a single undead creature was left moving in her wake. She made her way to the graveyard outside of the city itself when she was done. Slinging her bow over her shoulder she walked the graveyard her eye set on a pair of stones she was terribly familiar with.
As she reached the stones, she looked at the smooth stone which Kailei herself had ground down to a shine, and a tear ran from her eye as she crouched in front of them. She rested a hand on each. “Mother, Father, you are gravely missed,” She murmured softly as she moved to a sitting position. “As promised I fight the undead infection of our land each week…I will not quit until their presence is completely removed…or I die, whichever happens first.”
Ookami lay beside the huntress as she went through her method of mourning, the large wolf resting its head in Nanori’s lap. Nanori managed a weak smile for her companion as she let her hands fall from her parent’s grave stones. She sat for a moment longer, just patting the head of her companion. Tears running freely from her eye, and she didn’t wipe them away or try to hide them, this was the one time a week that Nanori let her weakness show.
Kailei would arrive soon after Nanori let her hands drop from the stones. Kailei always knew that when she could not reach her sister via the stone communication, that she could find her here. Silently the paladin just sat beside her sister, and she’d reach for Nanoroi’s hand.
There the three of them would sit until the sun set at the end of the day. The only ones remaining of their family…their bond tighter than ever they all had to find their own ways to mourn.
